The Italian Rightful Bride Harlequin comics eBook Lucy Gordon Esu Chihara Reviews
A smart, rich heiress who loves digging in the dirt tries to buy a handsome, broke Prince. Sounds intriguing--the writing is even descent--but this story collapses somewhere in the last act. Joanna Mortan and her son are by far the best thing about this book. I mean not only is Joanna born wealthy but she also makes her own way in the world by becoming a famous archeologist. My only problem is that she doesn't mind men using her for her money. She even expects it.
And maybe it's a different culture thing, but I didn't understand why Joanna had to pay her ex-husband money when he happily admits that he cheated on her four of their eight years of marriage. And she's okay with this. Happy to write the check. She even boast that if the ex-husband second wife isn't rich-that she will happily continue to pay him alimony because she can't have the father of her son lacking. What???
I don't care how amical the divorce was--this is crazy.
And Crystal- the hero's ex-wife is also demanding money from the hero after not only cheating in the marriage but barring another man's child. And he is scrambling to pay her--desperate even. What???
She broke her marriage vows-the destruction of the marriage is her fault. You don't run a tab during a marriage--a marriage for like ten to twelve years and then demand payment at the end. This must be a lost in translation kind of thing because the author I believe is English.
As far as romance--I don't know. The first part of the book, I was pulled into the romance and the emotional angst--but then twelve years later, I'm thinking Joanna should be thrilled to have spared herself marrying her prince--not that the man she married was any better prize--but the author tries to explain the ex-husband's infidelity as Joanna's fault because she was still truely in love with someone else. What???
This book should have been published two decades ago-when romance heroes raped their heroines and the women fell helplessly in love with their rapist. The thinking is just that warped. The extra star on the book is just because the story was well written despite the pathetic plot.
Joanna and Gustavo had an arranged marriage planned. He needed her money and she was willing to help. Everything was set and they were to be married within a few short weeks when she comes to visit before the wedding. Crystal, another woman, also shows up and Gustavo falls in love with her. Joanna overhears the lovers as he confesses his love for the other woman, and heart breaking she turns him loose to follow his dream of marrying Crystal. It was rather cold that the whole wedding still went on but with a different bride! Of course Joanna had to show up and put on a nice face so that the newlyweds wouldn't feel awful and there wouldn't be a scandal. She met Freddy Manton there and came across him a year or two later. They eventually married and had a child but later divorced when he continued to stray with other women.
This book reminded me so much of The Prince's Virgin Wife by Lucy Monroe only I didn't like the ero in that book the way I liked the hero in this one. He didn't set out to manipulate Joanna and he really thought that there was more to his relationship with Crystal than there was. Gustavo and Crystal had divorced too because she also strayed and had gotten pregnant with her trainer's child, only she wasn't a very likeable character as she abandoned her daughter to Gustavo and kept her trainer's child and didn't seem to really want to see her daughter. Joanna and Freddy were on better terms and shared custody of their son. He really loved Joanna but felt there was an extra person in their marriage and eventually started straying when he couldn't deal with that anymore. I liked how Gustavo admitted he was wrong all those years ago and that they both agreed that if they had married then it might not have worked out. They both needed to grow and mature into the people that they are now so that they could fall in love and make it last! I really believed in Gustavo and Joanna's love and was glad when they got back together. I even liked Freddy and felt sorry for him, but I didn't care for Crystal and don't think she will ever change. She was childish, selfish, and very neglectful towards her daughter and I wonder if she will act that way with her son later.
